Kovalchuk fastest ever to 30 before Jan. 1
Atlanta's Ilya Kovalchuk became the first NHL player to reach the 30-goal plateau this season when he scored the first of his two goals in the Thrashers' 5-3 loss to Florida on Thursday.
According to the Elias Stats Bureau, this is the first season in which a player has scored 30 goals before the end of December since 1999-2000. The last 10 players to beat the NHL pack:
