Police beat
South Elgin garage burns:
Firefighters quelled a fire in a two-car detached garage at 9N556 Flora Drive on Saturday morning. They were called out to the property about 10:40 a.m. for heavy smoke coming from the garage and arrived to find a fire in the attic, said Mick Krasowski, a spokesman for the South Elgin Fire District. The homeowner had been using a wood-burning stove in the garage and the heat moved into the insulation, then up into the attic where it ignited the rafters. Krasowski said they cut a hole in the roof to ventilate the building and removed a bunch of debris. Damage is estimated at about $10,000.
Popcorn starts house fire:
A stovetop popcorn-cooking session resulted in an estimated $150,000 damage to a house at 269 Foxmoor in Fox River Grove on Saturday night. Papers next to the stove caught on fire, launching a fire in the kitchen that then extended into the living room of the house, said Assistant Chief Jim Kreher of the Fox River Grove Fire Protection District. No one was injured in the blaze.
