Briefs: Truck fire causes delays
Westbound traffic on the Northwest Tollway, now known as the Jane Addams Memorial Tollway, was slowed Wednesday morning after a garbage truck caught fire near the Beverly Road exit in Hoffman Estates. Illinois State Police said there were no injuries; the fire wasn't serious. Police received the call shortly after 9 a.m. and shut down two lanes of the expressway around 10:30 a.m. The lanes were reopened about 15 minutes later.
Extra police enforcement
Like many area police departments, Palatine has started a stepped-up enforcement campaign this week to run through the holiday season. The initiative includes increased patrols day and night, focusing on impaired drivers. A department release says police will take a zero-tolerance approach to seat belt and child restraint violations. Palatine police also plan two special roadside checkpoints to be held at undisclosed locations Saturday and Dec. 28.
St. Zachary holiday show
St. Zachary Catholic Church will host Joy to the World!, an evening of music celebrating the season on Friday. It will feature St. Zachary musicians Deborah Kugler, soprano; Vitus Wong, tenor; Mary-Esther Caldrone, piano/organ; and Diane Kim, violin. Natalie Conseur, soprano, and Tamaron Conseur, baritone, will serve as guest musicians. The concert will start at 7 p.m. at St. Zachary, 567 W Algonquin Road, Des Plaines. Admission is free.
Froehlich coffee slated
Democratic state Rep. Paul Froehlich of Schaumburg will be providing complimentary cups of coffee and meeting with residents of his 56th District from 7:30 to 9:30 a.m. today at Caribou Coffee, 55 W. Schaumburg Road in Schaumburg. Froehlich is being challenged by John Moynihan of Schaumburg in the Feb. 5 Democratic primary for his state House seat. Froehlich plans to discuss such issues as state government, health care, education, mass transit and senior citizen tax relief.
Man hit by two vehicles
A 63-year-old man was killed early Tuesday morning along Golf Road and struck by at least two cars before his body was discovered, police said. The man was hit sometime between 1:20 and 1:40 a.m. just east of Meier Road. While one driver stopped, the first vehicle did not ,and police said it's possible the driver did not know a pedestrian was struck. The man's name was not released because his relatives had not been notified.
