Singletary won't seek Baylor job
Singletary won't seek Baylor job: Mike Singletary is staying with the San Francisco 49ers for now. The former Bears all-pro linebacker pulled himself from consideration for the Baylor head coaching opening Thursday. He said he wasn't offered the job at his alma mater.
"For me, it never got to that point," said Singletary, who met with Baylor officials for five hours Tuesday.
The Hall of Famer has stirred interest for head coaching jobs in the NFL the last two years, and there are expected to be plenty of openings after this season.
"My preference has always been that I wanted to stay in the NFL," said Singletary, who passed up an opportunity to coach his son, a redshirt outside linebacker at Baylor, in order to keep his NFL head coaching prospects alive.
McNabb misses practice: Donovan McNabb missed practice again Thursday because of ankle and thumb injuries, and it's uncertain whether the five-time Pro Bowl quarterback will play for the Eagles against New England on Sunday.
McNabb hurt his thumb early in Philadelphia's 17-7 win over Miami, and left the game after he sprained his right ankle in the second quarter. A.J. Feeley led the Eagles (5-5) to a pair of touchdowns and would start against the Patriots if McNabb can't play.
Coach Andy Reid has said that McNabb doesn't have to practice this week to play at New England (10-0). The decision on a starting quarterback could be made shortly before kickoff.
A.J. Feeley again took snaps with the Eagles' first-team offense amd said he will be ready to start if McNabb can't play.
Monaco to host '09 Tour start: The wealthy principality of Monaco will host the start of the Tour de France in 2009.
Organizers made the announcement Thursday and said they will give details of the 2009 start at a presentation in Monaco on Dec. 14. Prince Albert II will attend.
London hosted the start of this year's race, and the Tour will get going in the French region of Brittany in 2008.
Monaco also hosts Formula One's Monaco Grand Prix.
Federer tops Sampras again: Roger Federer overcame Pete Sampras' stubborn resistance Thursday to beat the retired American legend 7-6 (6), 7-6 (5) in their second Asian exhibition match.
The top-ranked Swiss star won their last encounter 6-4, 6-3 in South Korea on Tuesday, but the latest clash at Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, took nearly 90 minutes and proved a bit more difficult.
Their age difference became the decisive factor -- at 26, Federer was never in danger of losing against an opponent a decade older who retired from competitive tennis five years ago.
Nevertheless, Sampras, who has won a record 14 Grand Slams, showcased his big serves and hit ferocious forehand returns down the line -- the hallmarks of his 1990s heyday.
