Mt. Prospects' Shining Star nominations due soon

Each year the Mount Prospect Special Events commission honors individuals and organizations that help make the community a special place to live and work. They are honored as Shining Stars and recognized at the Celestial Celebration banquet. The 15th annual Celestial Celebration will be Feb. 2. Deadline for nominations is Nov. 15.

The 2008 award categories are:

Beautify Mount Prospect: To recognize a group or individual who has made a special effort to enhance the physical character of the village.

Best Business Partner: To recognize a business in Mount Prospect that has gone out of its way to be a good corporate citizen and served as an example to others that Mount Prospect is a vibrant community.

Champion for Youth: To recognize an individual, organization or program that enriches the lives of young people in a meaningful way.

Youth Should be Served Award: To recognize an individual who through volunteer or part time work champions the causes of youth.

Good-Better-Best Neighbor Award: To recognize a resident who has gone out of his or her way to be a good neighbor.

Home Town Award: To recognize a group or individual who has done something special to promote the feeling of community or to further unify the diverse groups within the community.

Living Legend Award: To recognize someone who has achieved near legendary status though his or her standing in the community.

Open Arms Award: To recognize an individual or organization that has readily opened its arms and its heart to the needy, lonely or less fortunate.

Rising Star Award: To recognize a junior or high school student who goes beyond that which is expected of them. This is a young person who deserves to be honored for what his or her leadership or contributions -- the Shining Stars of tomorrow.

Unsung Hero Award: To recognize an individual with a rather thankless, but necessary job. This person goes beyond the job he or she is paid to perform.

Living Legend Award: To recognize someone who has achieved near legendary status through his or her standing in the community.

Open Arms Award: To recognize an individual or organization that has readily opened its arms and its heart to the needy.

There Ought to be More People Like This Award: To recognize an individual, or couple that is virtually indispensable in the life of a group or organization. The person or couple takes on multiple tasks, helps wherever a hand is needed or takes charge when the occasion demands it.

Toast of the Town Award: To recognize an individual, group or organization that has contributed significantly to the cultural life of the community either through music, art, literature or other form of artistic endeavor.
