Schaumburg man sentenced to boot camp for biting boss during fight
A Schaumburg man admitted Thursday to biting a chunk out of his boss's face in the heat of fight -- landing himself a spot in the Cook County jail's boot camp.
Juan Calderon, 26, of 1070 N. Knollwood Drive, pleaded guilty to one count of aggravated battery with intent to cause great bodily harm. A second count, alleging he had intended permanent disfigurement, was dismissed.
Calderon had been drinking with his boss when the fight broke out in the early hours of April 4, police said. The scuffle began in the victim's basement on the 2300 block of Onyx Drive, then took the duo up the stairs and spilled onto the front lawn.
When police arrived shortly before 4:30 a.m., Calderon was "on top of the victim, punching him in the face and biting him in the face," Schaumburg Sgt. John Nebl said.
The victim is undergoing facial reconstruction surgeries, Assistant State's Attorney Michael Gerber said.
Authorities said they don't know what started the fight. Both men were treated at St. Alexius Medical Center in Hoffman Estates afterward.
Calderon, who has been free on bond, was taken into custody following his plea Thursday. He'll remain in the Cook County jail as he completes the roughly six-month boot camp program. Per a deal worked out with prosecutors and agreed to by Judge Thomas Fecarotta Jr., he also will spend a year on supervised release, which Gerber characterized as a more stringent form of parole.
