Meet with state Sen. Kotowski's representative: Janie Morrison from state Sen. Kotowski's office will answer questions privately regarding senior services, immigration, passport problems, veterans' benefits, Social Security and more from 10 a.m. to noon today. No appointments are required.
Living with Alzheimer's Disease Presentation: Richard Taylor, Ph.D., will present "Living with Alzheimer's Disease: One Patient's View" at 11 a.m. today. He will speak about his own experiences living with the disease. He will also have copies of his book, "Alzheimer's from the Inside Out," available for purchase. This program is cosponsored with Alden Courts Northbrook. (R)
One-on-One Career Counseling: Edie Kleinman, a licensed career counselor from Jewish Vocational Service, will provide 30-minute one-on-one assistance with interviewing, resume writing and other aspects of the job search process from 9-11:30 a.m. Wednesday. Signup at the Registration Desk is required. A waiting list will be kept. (R)
PAWS for a Story: Come to the library and read a story to a book-loving dog. Bring a favorite book or choose from our selection. Reading sessions are 15 minutes long and held on Tuesdays from 6:30-8 p.m., through Nov. 20. (R-YS)
Young readers may sign up for a 15-minute session for five consecutive weeks and practice their reading skills. Participants may register at the Youth Services Desk. A consent form must be signed by a parent or guardian.
Family Reading Night: The library invites children 3-6 years old and their families to a special "PJ Family Reading Night" from 7 to 8 p.m. Thursday. Children may wear their pajamas, bring a pillow, blanket or stuffed toy and curl up while reading a story aloud with other family members. Children may choose a library book or bring a favorite from home. The library will complete the evening with a bedtime story and a book raffle. Teen Book Discussion and author visit: Award-winning author Nancy Werlin will be at the Des Plaines Public Library at 5 p.m. Friday. The evening begins with a book discussion on Werlin's novel "Double Helix" in the third floor Teen Lounge and is open only to teens in grades 7-12. No registration is necessary. Copies of "Double Helix" are available at the Readers' Services desk, third floor. Later in the evening, all are invited to hear Werlin speak in the library's Friends Room from 7-8:30 p.m. Werlin will also be available to autograph copies of her books. Again, no registration is necessary.
Werlin writes psychological thrillers for teens and "Double Helix" is a fictional work about scientific progress and the ethical questions it raises. For more information, visit the library's Web site, www.dppl.org and click on "Events."
Library board meeting: The Library Board of Trustees will meet at 7 p.m. Nov. 20. The public is invited to attend.
Friends of the Library: Friends of the Library will meet at 7 p.m. Nov. 27.
Art Exhibit: Thomas Penna will display oil paintings in the third floor magazine reading area throughout November.
"Frank Lloyd Wright: Genius and Egotist": The library will present speaker Bill Hinchliff's lecture, titled "Frank Lloyd Wright: Genius and Egotist," at 7 p.m. Nov. 28. Drop-In Storytimes: Storytimes for children ages 3-5 will be held from 10 to 10:30 a.m. on Tuesdays and 2 to 2:30 p.m. on Wednesdays. Storytimes for 2-year-olds will be held from 10:45-11:15 a.m. on Tuesdays and Thursdays. Children's Book Week: Children and their families are invited to the library from 7 to 8 p.m. Wednesday. They will enjoy a program that both entertains and encourages children to read.
Drop-in Craft: The library will offer a drop-in craft from 1 to 4 p.m. Saturday, to celebrate the Thanksgiving holiday. The library provides craft materials. Library Closing: The library will be closed Nov. 22, for the Thanksgiving holiday.
Ongoing Book Sale: Friends of the Library sponsor an ongoing book sale on the first floor of the library during regular library hours.
