Lisle floors Westmont thanks to all-around game
Lisle's girls basketball team proved that shooting a high percentage from the field is not a must in order to get a win.
The Lions beat Westmont 50-38 Monday night despite shooting 20 of 67 from the floor, but made up for the poor shooting performance in two other key categories: Rebounding and turnovers.
The Lions dominated the glass early on as Sara Urban grabbed 11 boards in the first half while Lisle went into the break with a 24-13 rebounding advantage. But early in the third quarter, Urban picked up her fourth foul and had to sit down two minutes into the second half.
"I always get worried when she gets into foul trouble," Lisle coach Jeff Javior said. "She's like an extra coach on the floor for me. She sees everything that goes on when she is on the court. I am glad others were able to step up for her tonight."
Two of the players that stepped up while Urban, who had 8 points and 11 rebounds, was on the bench was Elizabeth Todd and Danielle Fernette. Todd scored 10 of her team-high 14 points in the second half while Fernette scored 8 of her 10 points in that half.
The Lions did not miss Urbans' rebounding as Lisle had four players who snatched at least 6 rebounds as the Lions won the battle of the boards 41-24.
"That's the story of our life," Westmont coach Mike McCord said. "We get beat on the boards all the time. That was not very surprising to hear the rebounding difference.
Lisle also was able to get nine extra possessions in the game as the Lions took better care of the ball as they forced Westmont (0-6) into 27 turnovers.
One of the reasons Westmont turned the ball over so many times was because of the pressure Lisle point guard Megan Hannan put on the Westmont ballhandlers.
Hannan chipped in with 5 points, 5 rebounds, 4 steals and 4 assists.
"That is her game -- she does a little bit of this and a little bit of that," Javior said. "She is probably the most talented player on the team but she has the least amount of confidence. She does a lot of great things for our team and she was one the players who really stepped up for us tonight."
One of the things that allowed Lisle to get their first win of the season and improve to 1-4 was the players understand their roles.
"We all do our part on this team," Todd said. "We have our shooters, our rebounders, our defensive stoppers, we pick each other up."
Freshman Allison Berg scored a game-high 16 points and grabbed 10 rebounds while Hillary West scored 14 points and had 5 rebounds.
