Memorial tree-planting grove opens in Cary

Recently, the village of Cary crews planted the first trees in the new Memorial Grove Tree-Planting Area.

On Oct. 16, the village board authorized the creation of a memorial grove tree planting area. This area was created in response to several requests from residents who wished to have a tree planted in memory of a deceased friend or loved one.

The village selected the Tom Vieweg Nature Area as the first Memorial Grove area because of its natural beauty and accessibility.

"We are happy to be able to offer such a service, especially one that helps people honor friends or loved ones who have passed away," said Mayor Steve Lamal.

"It is a quiet nature area that is well-suited for this purpose."

The first memorial tree-planting area was selected because it can accommodate up to 10 pre-selected tree species in predetermined locations.

The cost to purchase and plant a tree is $150. For an additional $50, the village will install a small memorial plaque. When ordering a tree, donors will be able to select the location and type of tree on a first-come, first-served basis.

Those interested in having a memorial tree planted should call the village hall at (847) 639-0003 for details, or see the village's fall newsletter for the memorial tree planting form.
