Not too early for Santa at mall
Santa Claus kicked off the holiday season in Vernon Hills Saturday with a free breakfast, carolers and a parade through Westfield Hawthorn shopping center.
Families posed for photos with the jolly elf in the food court, while sharing breakfast.
"Free food -- it rocks," 9-year-old Tatiana Lehocky said, as she munched on scrambled eggs courtesy of McDonald's.
Lehocky's 13-month-old sister, Olivia, seemed to enjoy her first visit with Santa.
"This was a great choice. It was a nice breakfast and a good time for the family," said John Lehocky, Olivia and Tatiana's dad.
The mall also celebrated the grand opening of Playtown, a free indoor activity area for children, with a special appearance by Curious George. Youngsters also were treated to face panting, balloon artistry, magic shows and a live theater performance.
"We registered more than 500 for the breakfast. It's the holiday season, and we wanted to take the opportunity to give back to the community," said marketing director Nicole Kneeland-Woods.
The younger set enjoyed the climbing structures and interactive toys in Playtown.
"I thought it would be a neat idea. I learned about it through a club message board," said Tammy Bolf, of Kildeer, enjoying breakfast with her children, Jimmy, 6, and Amber, 5.
The fun continues today. From noon to 1 p.m., Radio Disney will hold a kids dance contest with giveaways, and Those Funny Little People will perform from 4 to 4:30 p.m., followed by jugglers entertaining from 5 to 6 p.m.
The mall also is hosting a Giving Tree through Dec. 14 to benefit Arden Shore Child and Family Services. Shoppers select a 'wish tag' from the tree, located on the lower level in center court, and return the unwrapped gift to the concierge center. The packages will be picked up by Arden Shore Child and Family Services for distribution to local families.
