Seniors back to school

With many heading off to college next year, seniors at Barrington High School recently got the chance to spend some quality time with their family's elder members.

The school invited members of its senior class to bring their grandparents to school for a morning to see just what happens at Barrington High School each day.

"This was a way for us to open up the doors of the high school a little bit more," said Scott Kasik, Barrington's associate principal.

Nearly 50 seniors and 70 grandparents participated in the school's first Grandparent's Day, which Kasik said was a big hit.

"The students really enjoyed taking (the grandparents) around the building and sharing some of their schedule with them," Kasik said.

The event started with a morning reception, which Kasik said gave the students a chance to introduce their grandparents to their peers.

During the reception, Kasik said the school was able to thank the grandparents for the role they've played in helping to raise their grandchildren.

"We know terrific kids don't get that way by accident," Kasik said.

After the reception, the students took their grandparents to two of their classes and lunch.

Mary Bubolz of Lake in the Hills said she really enjoyed spending the day with granddaughter Lindsey Meyer.

"It was the most wonderful day," Bubolz said of being able to go to a choir and photography class with Meyer.

Coming from a high school with only 50 students, Bubolz said Barrington High School was quite impressive.

"I have never seen a cafeteria in a high school as fabulous as this one," Bubolz said.

After classes and lunch, Kasik said the event wrapped up with a special assembly highlighting the school's fine arts department.

"They got a chance to see the range of student talent in the building," Kasik said.

The event was so successful that Kasik said they plan to host it again next year.

With her granddaughter graduating in June, Bubolz said she is disappointed she won't get to participate next year.

"Maybe I can adopt a grandchild for next year," Bubolz joked.
