Two victims had drug in systems

Prosecutors say Fakir M. Jaffrie had marijuana in his system when he crashed his car into a tree Sept. 8, killing his four friends and passengers.

At least two others in Jaffrie's silver 2003 Infiniti G35 also had marijuana in their systems when they died.

Toxicology results of Ayush Joshi, a 20-year-old from Hoffman Estates, and Zohair Husain, an 18-year-old from Algonquin, showed the presence of cannabis, according to testimony at a Kane County coroner's inquest Wednesday.

Both were pronounced dead at the scene after Jaffrie's car crashed into a tree about 3:30 a.m. on Dietrich Road between Brier Hill Road and Route 20 west of Huntley.

The coroner's jury eventually ruled their deaths as reckless homicide. Husain was in the front seat, Joshi was in the back.

Jaffrie, 24, of Crystal Lake, has been charged with reckless homicide and aggravated DUI in their deaths, along with Zohair's brother, 20-year-old Kumail Husain, and Henry Onwualu, 19, of Huntley, who died several days later from their injuries.

"The driver has cannabis in his system and was going at least 20 miles (per hour) over the speed limit," said Cheryl Lyne, Kane County sheriff's detective.

Lyne declined to say whether authorities recovered any marijuana or paraphernalia from the wreckage.

"We found some items there. I'm not going to say what they were, but they're different items being tested," she said.

If convicted, Jaffrie faces six to 28 years in prison. He is free on $75,000 bond with an electronic home monitoring device and is due next in court on Nov. 8.
