Remember Floyd's? Owners are cookin' again
Remember Floyd's? The longtime landmark Carpentersville restaurant was the site of many a function for residents throughout the region until its closure almost two years ago. Owner Vic Jason didn't go far -- and now he's back.
Vic, his son Brian Jason and daughter Patti Johnson -- a District 300 teacher recently named a Wal-Mart teacher of the year -- will bring their fine-food touch to Sun City, where they're taking over the Del Webb food service, including the Walleye Grill, from Aramark Catering on Nov. 28.
Brian, with Vic, already runs the Barn of Barrington, which is renowned for Sunday brunch and banquets.
Operating as Twelfth Knight Catering LLC, the Jasons recently won a five-year contract with the Sun City Community Association board and the food and beverage committee.
In addition to catering events, they'll operate the Walleye Grill and are converting the sports pub into a full-service bar.
Vic tells me they'll bring a touch of Floyd's fine dining but also will offer carry-out dinners like rotisserie or broasted chicken. And he invites us all to stop by.
What's that buzz?
Patricia Schmitt of East Dundee and her grandsons Scott, 4, and Lucas, 2, got a special look at this year's unusually prolific crop of hummingbirds.Although typically the hummingbirds were quick fly-bys around Patricia's East Dundee bird feeders, one hummingbird this year staked special claim to the food stations. It even chased other hummingbirds away.Better still, it went beak to eye with Scott through the patio door, hovering just outside the glass as the fascinated young man looked on. Seems this bird may have created a birder.Patricia said they enjoyed the recent hummingbird story done by my colleagues Chuck Keeshan and George LeClaire, even though we keep trying to hide the video. It's next to this column on our Web site, so if you, too, were wondering at all the hummingbirds this season, check it out.Do you hear what #8230;Diane Fuqua of the First Congregational Church of Dundee invites us all to attend today's organ recital at 3 p.m. in the church sanctuary featuring Richard D. Jaeggi, a graduate of the University of Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music. The concert, featuring a variety of music, will feature the church's new digital organ, which has way more gadgets than I understand. Sounds like he's going to rock the house. You'll find the church at 900 S. Eighth St., (Route 31 and Angle Tarn) in West Dundee.Name that tuneGus Leep of West Dundee and the Presbyterian Church of Barrington also invites us all -- and especially you young musicians -- to attend the Gaudede Brass Quintet concert at 4 p.m. Oct. 28 at the church, 6 Brinker Road (the corner of Lake Cook Road and Brinker Road) in Barrington Hills. The concert will feature a bit of Bach and more, including familiar tunes from Stephan Foster like "Beautiful Dreamer." Leep says it's a great chance for young brass players to see how professionals do it and a great afternoon of music for others to enjoy. It's free with any donations helping fund their Youth Mission trip. You're invitedKathy Chwedyk of National Association of Systems Administrators Education Corp., the group that just sponsored the Stand Down for Veterans in Algonquin, tells me they're hosting another wonderful event Oct. 22 at the Crystal Lake Holiday Inn on Route 31. It's their recognition reception and features Tammy Duckworth, director of the Illinois Department of Veterans Affairs, and Patrick Winfrey, director of the Veterans' Employment and Training for the U.S. Department of Labor. If ever a veteran could find a little clout. If you'd like to attend, call Amy Johnson at (866) 338-4968 or e-mail her at amy_johnson@nasaeducation.org.
