Barrington places second at New Trier
The Barrington hockey team had a strong weekend at the New Trier tournament.
The Broncos' effort sent them into Sunday's championship game against St. Rita. But Barrington ended in second place after a 4-3 loss.
"We started off slow and fought back in the last five minutes of the game," said Barrington coach Rob Hutson, whose team fought back from a 3-0 deficit. "The guys never quit working and never gave up."
With the game tied at 3-3, St. Rita scored with less than a minute to play to put the game away.
Harrison Pinkus, David Hirsch and David Nolan had goals during for the Broncos while goalie Mitch Saviola defended.
Throughout the tourney, Barrington beat New Trier Blue, New Trier White and Warren by 5 or more goals.
"I'm very happy with them," Hutson said of his team's progress. "They're working hard and doing what I'm asking to. They're very close to being rewarded."
• On Sunday, the Conant/Schaumburg/Hoffman Estates co-op lost an exciting 4-3 match to Huntley.
"We were decimated on our roster," said coach John Conenna, whose team was short three due to suspension and three more to illness. "We hung in there but lost."
Conant outshot Huntley 35-31 and had goals from Mike Gannon, Kevin Kersey and Brian Lee.
"We didn't take many penalties," Conenna said. "We were on the power play a lot. The key was we stayed out of the box but still lost."
Coach also pointed out the play of Kevin Kersey along with John Rizzetto, who came up from JV and stepped it up on defense.
Conant (2-4) has also been solid in goal this season thanks to Danny McKenzie and Lee. Four of those missing from the roster return this week to Conant back near full strength.
