Briefs: New fire inspectors hired

The village of Lombard has hired three new part-time fire inspectors for its fire prevention bureau. The new hires, firefighters Al Green and Mike Ringa, and Lt. Vince Hanlon, will maintain their regular positions within the fire department, and work as inspectors on their days off.

Blue banners in Naperville

October is Operation Military Recognition month and Naperville American Legion Post 43 and Judd Kendall VFW Post 3873 are planning a special event. The organizations will sponsor a reception and presentation of Blue Star Banners to Naperville-area families of active military personnel at 2 p.m. Sunday at the VFW Hall, 908 W. Jackson Ave., Naperville. The Blue Star Service Banner was designed in 1917 and quickly became the symbol of a family with a child in military service. The groups want to present a banner to each family in Naperville that has a loved one serving in the military. For details, call Priscilla Laubscher at (630) 305-8271.

Meeting reviews special ed

Addison School District 4 will hold a meeting at 4 p.m. today to discuss the district's plans to provide special education services for students with disabilities who attend private and home schools within the district for the 2007-08 school year. Parents of private school or home-schooled students who have been or may be identified with a disability and who reside within District 4 may attend. The meeting will be in the district office at Indian Trail Junior High School, 222 Kennedy Drive. For details, call Robert Zanillo, director of special education, at (630) 458-2462.

Superintendent meeting

The Itasca District 10 School Board will host a Superintendent Search Forum at 7 p.m. Oct. 17 at Raymond Benson Primary School, 301 E. Washington St., Itasca. Residents are invited to attend and give input regarding the characteristics they desire in the new superintendent. If you are unable to attend the forum, a Leadership Needs Profile form is available by visiting www.itasca.k12.il.us The search firm will provide a written report of the results to the school board at a future meeting.

Leaf pickup in Lombard

The village of Lombard will offer free leaf pickup for residents from Oct. 22 to Nov. 30. Free pickup is only for yard waste stored in Kraft brown paper bags. Residents will be required to place yard waste stickers on cans and bags filled with leaves or other yard waste. Properly bundled brush does not require a sticker. Bundles of brush must be securely tied, not exceeding 6 feet in length o r18 inches in diameter, and cannot exceed 50 pounds. No individual limb can exceed six inches in diameter. The village's yard waste program will end for the season on Dec. 14. Anyone with questions on the free leaf pickup may call the village's public works department at (630) 620-5740.
