Briefs: House fire in Streamwood

Streamwood firefighters are investigating the origin of a blaze Tuesday afternoon that caused an estimated $20,000 in structural damage and destroyed $10,000 of personal property at a home at 6 W. Green Meadows Blvd. No one was home at the time of the fire, which was found to be contained to a lower-level utility room. Smoke damage was spread throughout the house. Neighbors called 911 at 2:45 p.m. after hearing smoke detectors ringing in the house and smelling smoke outside. When firefighters arrived two minutes later, they saw light smoke coming from the chimney.

Walk to School day today

Many schools are also incorporating lessons about walking and bicycling safely to school and why doing so can be healthier for the students and the planet. Among area schools participating this morning are Gray M. Sanborn and Winston Campus elementary schools in Palatine.
