Griese named NFC offensive player of the week
Bears QB Brian Griese was named NFC Offensive Player of the Week after completing 27 of 41 pass attempts for 322 yards, 1 touchdown and no interceptions for a 97.8 passer rating in the Bears' 19-16 comeback victory in Philadelphia.
This is Griese's third career Offensive Player of the Week award and first with the Bears. The 10th-year veteran was honored as AFC Offensive Player of the Week twice with the Denver Broncos (Week 6 of 1999 and Week 1 of 2001).
Trailing 16-12 with less than two minutes remaining in regulation (1:52) and out of timeouts in Week 7 at Philadelphia, Griese led the Bears offense on an 11-play, 97-yard drive that was capped by a 15-yard touchdown pass to WR Muhsin Muhammad with nine seconds remaining.
During that possession Griese completed 7 of 11 pass attempts (2 incompletions were spikes to stop the clock) for 97 yards and a touchdown for a 122.2 passer rating. It was the second consecutive 300-yard passing game for Griese (381 vs. Minnesota in Week 6), making him the first quarterback since Jim Miller in 1999 (Nov. 14, 422 vs. Minnesota Nov. 21, 357 at San Diego) to throw for 300 yards in back-to-back contests.
In four starts this season since taking over as the Bears starting QB, Griese has completed 102 of 163 pass attempts for 1,203 yards, 8 touchdowns and 6 interceptions for a 86.0 passer rating. His 300.8 passing yards per game is second highest in the NFL (Tom Brady, NE, 303.6) this season.
