Trunks will be full of treats in church lot
Children won't be the only ones wearing costumes this Friday during the third annual Trunk or Treat at Oak Brook Community Church.
Adults who participate in the event also deck out the trunks of their rides to look like scenes from Star Wars, dog houses or any other idea inspired by the season.
Then, children travel from car to car -- wait, make that trunk to trunk -- on church grounds seeking candy.
The Rev. Brandon Hampton said the event attracts between 800 and 1,000 people from Oak Brook and surrounding communities.
"It's growing every year," Hampton said. "We want to provide a safe environment for families and give the children something that's fun."
This year's event will feature games, hayrides, food and prizes for best costumes and best-decorated trunk.
Hampton said the church prefers that children avoid scary or violent costumes.
Local police and fire departments also will visit to show off their cars and trucks, and the National Guard will display military vehicles.
The main attraction, Hampton said, will be two shows performed by professional illusionists and jugglers Ned and Joan Way.
Trunk or Treat is one of several events hosted by Oak Brook Community Church throughout the year. In addition to its annual car show, the church also hosts themed family nights, such as a luau.
"For a lot of families, money is tight, so they don't get an opportunity to go out and enjoy the evening like they could," Hampton said.
