Huskies, Warriors get used to pool

Often the reasons for competing in a meet as tough as the New Trier Relays are as varied as the numbers of teams in the pool.

Some are beginning to pile up laps, others are trying to see how they stack up against some of the top teams in the state -- while still others are working on their lineups with conference and sectional meets coming up soon.

Barrington, which enjoyed a sensational meet at New Trier last year before finishing second at state, finished fourth Saturday with 124 points.

The host Trevians won the meet with 163 points followed by Hinsdale Central (139) and Evanston (133).

"It's different competition, so we went at it with a real strong lineup," said Barrington coach Jim Bart. "We did so-so. Our varsity relays were all right. We had a freshman in there and she had a real good swim."

The Fillies won the 200-yard medley relay behind Victoria Waring, Emily Fogle, Alexa Hamilton and Kim Steelman.

Hamilton also won the 200 IM, Fogle placed first in the breaststroke, breaking the meet record held by Naperville North's Katie Stratton, while Barrington's breaststroke team of Fogle and Hamilton did the same.

Naperville North, with 93 points, came in fifth despite winning just one event, the team of Emma Williams and Sarah Rendek in the 100 fly.

Waubonsie Valley placed eighth with 90 points.

"We tried a lot of different combinations, but we wanted to have some competition against teams that will be going to state," said Warriors coach Tom Schweer. "We didn't do well, but we do have aspirations of being back here in a few weeks from now."

The state meet will be held at New Trier next month.

"We didn't have one person in particular who stood out. We did well as a team," Schweer added.
