Nothing new to report on Havlat's shoulder injury
The news on Martin Havlat on Saturday was that there still was no news.
After Havlat had tests done on his injured right shoulder Friday at the University of Chicago Hospital, the Hawks still weren't ready to release anything definitive about their star player's future status.
"We'll have more of an idea in about a week," said Hawks coach Denis Savard. "We're going to get a second opinion. We want things to settle down in his shoulder for now. We'll see how he is next week and get a second opinion and we'll able to tell what the situation is."
Havlat's shoulder popped out of its socket during play in Thursday's season opener at Minnesota. It was the same shoulder he injured two seasons ago with the Ottawa Senators and again last season with the Blackhawks.
In Havlat's place on Saturday, rookie Patrick Kane started and dished off 1 assist and scored the only shootout goal.
"Obviously I wouldn't be there if Havlat was still in the lineup," said Kane before Saturday's game. "You hate to see him go. I guess it's an opportunity for guys to step in and prove what they got and show their skills and stuff. You never want to see a guy go down like that. We're looking forward to get him back."
Toews to play next game: The Hawks do expect to have rookie Jonathan Toews in the lineup for Wednesday's home game.
Toews, the No. 3 overall pick in the 2006 NHL draft, was scheduled to have an X-ray on his broken finger on Saturday. Toews injured his finger during the Hawks' second preseason game.
Rookie Patrick Kane is already starting to talk like a veteran.
Kane, No. 1 overall pick in the 2007 NHL draft, wasn't feeling at all nervous before playing in Saturday's home opener.
"I hate to say it, but the first preseason game was the most nervous I was," Kane said. "I think I'm good now. I'm adjusted to the level and looking forward to it."
He also understands the expectations that have been placed on him, but he doesn't see it as pressure.
"I don't think it's pressure," Kane said. "I think that's why they drafted me in the first place to be that kind of player and give some offense. I'll have to live up to those goals."
