Briefs: Firefighters wear pink
Des Plaines firefighters wore pink T-shirts on the job Wednesday in honor of Breast Cancer Awareness Day. Mayor Tony Arredia asked city employees to wear pink in recognition of breast cancer awareness. Des Plaines Community Health Nurse Madeline May also reminded the public that the American Cancer Society suggests that women over 40 years old should have a yearly mammogram. Egging incident escalates
A 17-year-old Rolling Meadows teen was charged with reckless driving for hitting a man with a car after an egg throwing incident, police said. Jorge Perez, 17, of the 2500 block of Wilke Road, Rolling Meadows, and a 16-year-old passenger hurled an egg at a man who was dismounting his motorcycle on Oct. 7 in Rolling Meadows, police said. The man reported to police that he saw the 16-year-old throwing eggs from the car. He then chased the car on his motorcycle into a dead-end road, police said. The man got off his motorcycle, and Perez hit him with his car, police said. After the man rolled off the hood, he grabbed Perez and punched him in the face several times, police said. He called police, while detaining Perez and his four passengers. The man suffered cuts and bruises, but received no hospital treatment. Perez also needed no medical attention. The 16-year-old is charged with one count of battery.
Shula visits Elk Grove
NFL Hall of Famer Don Shula will visit Alexian Brothers Medical Center in Elk Grove Village today, as spokesman for a national campaign to raise awareness about the importance of managing high blood pressure around the clock, including the early morning hours. He is one of 65 million Americans who suffer from high blood pressure, or hypertension. Shula, the former Miami Dolphins coach, will host a free blood pressure screening at 8 a.m. at Alexian Brothers Medical Center, 800 Biesterfield Road, Elk Grove Village.
History lesson for Palatine
Protecting, preserving and celebrating Palatine's heritage will be the focus of a program at 7 p.m. Tuesday at Hotel Indigo, 920 E. Northwest Hwy. The hourlong program is free and open to the public. Staff from the Illinois Historic Preservation Agency will discuss historic preservation and how it can relate to Palatine through the designation of local landmarks and historic districts. Officials will talk about how the Certified Local Government program could help Palatine create an effective local historic preservation program. Economic revitalization through the Illinois Main Street program and through tax incentives available for historic preservation will also be discussed.
Schaumburg concert
Schaumburg High School invites the public to the "Baroque and Beyond" orchestra concert 7:30 p.m. today at the Carl Weimer Auditorium. This is the orchestra's fall concert featuring pieces by Bach, Handel, Britten and Robert W. Smith. The concert and symphony orchestras will perform.
