Downtown Wheaton is a treat for kids
Wheaton's little monsters should have no problem finding which places are ripe for treats instead of tricks.
In downtown Wheaton, official trick-or-treating hours run from 3 to 6 p.m.
Downtown businesses should have orange signs letting boys and ghouls know whether they're handing out candy.
Jeané Garza, manager of the Downtown Wheaton Association, said a good portion of downtown businesses will participate this year. Shopkeepers will generally pass out treats until they run out, regardless of the 3 to 6 p.m. time frame, she said.
In neighborhoods, city officials are asking homeowners to leave porch lights on if they're participating in the fun.
Children should be reminded that, although it's called trick-or-treating, property damage or vandalizing homes not participating may earn a visit from the police.
"It's considered vandalism and littering, and that will not be tolerated," said Deputy Police Chief Tom Meloni. "The main thing is they be safe."
Wheaton officials advise children to travel in groups, wear bright clothes, stick to one side of the street and hug the roadside in neighborhoods where there are no sidewalks.
