Partners in Learning seeks preschoolers

Glen Ellyn Elementary District 41 has openings for Partners in Learning, its free program for preschoolers ages 3 to 5 and their adult companions, meeting for 90 minutes at 9:30 a.m. or 1 p.m. beginning Wednesday at first Presbyterian Church, 550 N. Run for Jack and a cure for melanoma

The 4th annual 5K walk/run, This Run's for Jack, to fight melanoma will begin at 8 a.m. Sunday in Ackerman Park, 22W101 St. Charles Road, Glen Ellyn. Post-race activities include skin checks, massages, music, refreshments and awards. Proceeds benefit research and programs to cure melanoma. Panthers named at Glenbard North

Glenbard North High School in Carol Stream will honor its Panthers of the Quarter for the first quarter during a breakfast celebration Oct. 11. The program honors students for academic excellence and improvement, improved attendance and acts of good citizenship.

Celebrate 100 years with fire department

The Glen Ellyn Volunteer Fire Company will celebrate its 100th anniversary with a dedication ceremony at 11 a.m. Saturday at the firehouse, 525 Pennsylvania Ave., Glen Ellyn. The ceremony will be part of the open house from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. An open house is planned at both stations from 7 to 9 p.m. Monday. Station 2 is 681 Taft Ave., Glen Ellyn.

Fall extravaganza to benefit child

The Glendale Heights Junior Woman's Club will hold its 24th annual fall extravaganza auction and craft fair beginning at 6:15 p.m. Oct. 26 at Glendale Lakes Golf Club, 1550 President St., Glendale Heights. Dinner is at 7 and the live auction at 7:30 p.m. The auction will benefit Timothy Jacob "T.J." Skipper, 2, who was diagnosed with retinoblastoma, a form of childhood eye cancer, and had his right eye removed. Proceeds also will benefit the Homeless Sandwich Project, a program run by F. James and Virginia Proffitt of Glendale Heights, to feed more than 800 people in the streets of Chicago per week. Tickets are $25 and include dinner.
