Police clear out neighborhood during dispute

A 36-year-old Wauconda man is in custody after barricading himself in his parents' garage one day after a Lake County judge ordered him to stay away from the house.

Bruce M. Gorney is charged with aggravated assault, criminal trespass to a residence and resisting a police officer. He is in Lake County jail on a $150,000 bond.

It was his second arrest in three days, and the standoff forced police to evacuate neighbors for a few hours.

Gorney was in bond court Monday morning facing charges of criminal trespass to a residence, unlawful interference with the reporting of domestic violence and resisting arrest, all stemming from a Sunday evening arrest.

Around 8:45 p.m. Monday, Gorney returned to his parents' house at 124 Oaks Ave. and barricaded himself in a detached garage, Wauconda police Sgt. John Thibault said.

His parents, Sandy and Mike Gorney, and sister were home and called police.

Thibault said officers attempted for several hours to talk to Gorney, who indicated he had a weapon.

Around 1:30 a.m. Tuesday, the Lake County Sheriff's Tactical Response Team broke down the door of the garage.

Thibault said police used bean-bag rounds to subdue Gorney and arrest him.

Sandy Gorney said police shot her son's dog, a 5-year-old bull terrier, after Gorney was arrested. The dog was in the garage the entire time and later was euthanized.

Sandy Gorney said the dog was shot through its back, and the bullet hit the dog's lungs and exited its chest.

"He was a good dog who liked people," she said. "The shot was to the back, which means he was running away from police. I don't know why they had to shoot him."

Thibault wouldn't confirm details about the dog, other than it was shot by a tactical response team member.

He referred questions to the sheriff's office, but a representative could not be reached Wednesday.

Oaks Avenue residents were ordered to evacuate their homes around 9:45 p.m. Monday and didn't return until after 3:30 a.m. Tuesday.

A Catholic church on Main Street in Wauconda was open for residents.

Maria and Jerry Hernandez, 129 Oaks Ave., went to dinner with their four children and returned home around 9:30 p.m. to find police lining their street.

"I put the kids in their room right away because I was worried it had something to do with drugs," Maria Hernandez said. "Right away a cop knocked on the door and told us to leave."
