Writing Comic Books: In "What You Need to Know About Writing Comic Books and Graphic Novels," comic book writers Russell Lissau ("The Batman Strikes") and Joshua Elder ("Mail Order Ninja") will discuss the art of writing comic books, breaking into the business and all things caped and cowled at 7 p.m. today.
The Back Roads of Tuscany: Take a trip into the beautiful region of Tuscany, Italy, known for its landscape and artistic legacy, at noon on Tuesday. World travelers Al and Gail Popowits will present a trip to southern Tuscany, featuring San Gimignano, Pienza and Montalcino among other locations.
Children's book discussion: Students in second and third grade can enjoy a craft and discussion of "Akimbo and the Elephants" by Alexander McCall Smith at 7 p.m. Tuesday. A complimentary copy of the book will be reserved at registration and should be read before the program.
Music America Grew Up With: Loose Change and Friends, a string band composed of banjo, guitar, Autoharp and mandolin, will present a program of American folk tunes that have survived for over two centuries. Join Loose Change and Friends as they entertain with old-time dance tunes and nonsensical songs at 7 p.m. on Tuesday.
Living a Full Life: Senior living expert Charles Schwartz will share tips and tricks on living independently from 10:30 to noon Thursday. Mr. Schwartz will cover a variety of topics, including: living with low vision and hearing impairment, health and wellness, science and medicine, and consumer education and awareness. Caregivers are encouraged to attend this "must see" program. Refreshments will be provided.
eBay Basics: Jack Waddick, a full-time eBay Power Seller and eBay University instructor, will give the inside scoop on buying and selling on eBay using live demonstrations at 7 p.m. Thursday.
Second Annual Car Show: Four divisions of cars -- sports, muscle, classic and import/tuner -- will compete in the library's 2007 Car Show from noon to 2 p.m. on Sunday. Stop by and cast a vote for Best in Show, while enjoying entertainment, a live DJ, children's activities, the Circus Boy, raffle, giveaways, free food and refreshments. Entry forms are available at the Patron Services Desk for those interested in entering their car into competition.
The Circus Boy: Children and adults will enjoy this high-powered dose of comedy, juggling and fun during the library's Car Show at 1 p.m. on Sunday. Bobby Hunt the Circus Boy is a juggler, comedian and a variety performer. He has appeared on stage with acts such as the Righteous Brothers, Beach Boys and Billy Ray Cyrus. He is also known for riding the world's smallest bike while juggling everything in sight. Registration is not required.
Pizza and Pages: The new teen book discussion group will meet once a month from 5 to 6 p.m., starting Sept. 24. The library will provide pizza and free copies of the selected title. The first book is "Life As We Knew It" by Susan Beth Pfeffer, a story about survival after a meteor collides with the moon and subsequent extreme weather conditions force a family to make some tough choices. Copies of the book are available at the Adult Services Desk.
Do You Want to Dance?: Learn some fun ballroom dances from 7 to 8 p.m. Sept. 24. Jessie DeSoto, from Fred Astaire Studios, teaches the salsa, rumba and the push pull. DeSoto has appeared on "Dancing with the Stars" and has competed throughout the country. Wear dress shoes.
Glue and Go Costumes: Get ready for Halloween with Holly Cleeland, author of "Glue and Go Costumes for Kids." Holly will demonstrate how to make prize-winning costumes from household items at 7 p.m. on Sept. 26. Three creative costumes will be raffled at this program.
National Library Card Sign-up Month: To celebrate National Library Card Sign-up Month during the month of September, patrons can stop by any of the businesses listed at www.vapld.info, show a Vernon Area Public Library District library card, and receive special discounts.
