Briefs: Route 120 lane shift

Traffic on Route 120 over the Tri-State tollway will be shifted beginning today as part of a project to rebuild the bridge to allow four lanes of traffic in each direction. The eastbound traffic on the bridge will be shifted to the westbound side and be reduced to one lane. Westbound traffic will be reduced to one through lane and one auxiliary lane. That set-up is expected to be in place until early next year when the eastbound portion of the bridge will be demolished and rebuilt. Tollway ramps will not be affected.

Dist. 103 OKs budget

Lincolnshire-Prairie View District 103 has approved its 2007-08 budget totaling $23.1 million, a 1.45 percent decrease from last year's budget. The budget includes a 5.4 increase to instructional salaries and a $334,044 increase to the building fund, which includes work to construct the fitness center at Daniel Wright Junior High School. Prior to the board approval at the Sept. 10 meeting, board member Ben Yomtoob said the district has developed a position where it is building fund balances, and the budget does not put the district in a position to eat those balances away.

Kids cleaning up river

The question of just how floodwaters affected a section of the Des Plaines River will be part of this year's fourth "CPR for the DPR" river cleanup starting at Independence Grove Forest Preserve near Libertyville. On Saturday, about 75 students from Warren Township and Libertyville high schools are expected to start cleaning up debris at the canoe launch and work their way along the river. The event is part of "It's Our River Day," designated by Illinois Lt. Gov. Pat Quinn and the Illinois River Coordinating Council. "Of particular interest during this year's river sweep will be whether recent floodwaters changed the amount of debris," said Mike Mieszala, environmental science instructor at Warren. He and David Lapish, an English teacher at Libertyville High School, help organize students for the cleanup, which starts at 10 a.m. and ends at noon.
