Briefs: Tollway lane closures

Overnight lane closures, including temporary 15-minute full closures of the Tri-State Tollway, are scheduled through next week. Long-term shoulder closures in both directions of the tollway under the Route 120 bridge began Friday and will continue until early next year. On Monday, two northbound lanes will close at 10 p.m. Six full, 15-minute closures of the northbound lanes are scheduled between midnight and 4 a.m., to allow for the removal of bridge beams. The same closures are planned for Tuesday.

Fill the drum

Marching bands from Gurnee-area schools will join forces to collect money for the American Cancer Society with an event at Warren Township High School. Called "Fill the Drum," the third annual program at 7:30 p.m. Monday will feature performances from Viking Junior High School Marching Vikings, Woodland Middle School Marching Wildcats, and the Warren Marching Show Band on the high school football field, which is located at the O'Plaine Campus, 500 N. O'Plaine Road, Gurnee. Those who attend are asked to place their monetary donations in a drum at the entrance gate of the stadium. Collections for the past two years of the fundraiser have averaged $5,000.

Grand opening event

Grayslake Park District hosts a grand opening celebration from noon to 2 p.m. Sunday for its new recreation center at 240 Commerce Drive, near Center Street and Atkinson Road. The first 50 families who attend the event will receive a $10 gift certificate good toward a park district program. There also will be raffles, giveaways, free balloons, face painting and tattoos. Activities and demonstrations will include fitness, yoga, sports and games. Grayslake park board members and other officials will be present to meet with visitors. Log home expo

A Log Home & Timber Frame Expo will run through Sunday afternoon at the Renaissance Schaumburg Hotel & Convention Center. About 75 of the industry's leading companies and craftsmen will be there. Experts in a variety of log home and timber frame home topics will conduct free seminars. The show will run from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. Saturday and 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday. Our Lady of Guadalupe talk

To recognize the 475th anniversary of the appearance of Our Lady of Guadalupe to St. Juan Diego, a lecture will be presented in English and Spanish at 3 p.m. today at Holy Name Cathedral, State and Superior streets, Chicago. The lecture "Our Lady of Guadalupe: The Woman Who Changed the Hemisphere" also will be presented in Spanish at 2 p.m. Sunday at Maryville's Our Lady of Guadalupe Chapel, 1150 N. River Road, Des Plaines. Organized by the Knights of Columbus, the talk and accompanying slideshow will be led by the Rev. Eduardo Chavez, postulator of St. Juan Diego's cause for sainthood.
