Briefs: Decision on demolition

Decision on demolition

Schaumburg trustees Tuesday awarded a $33,000 contract to Langos Corporation of Barrington Hills for the demolition of the former Fire Station 1 at 1459 W. Schaumburg Road. The demolition will likely occur in mid- to late October, after the public works employees now occupying it can move into their own new building at 714 S. Plum Grove Road. Schaumburg firefighters moved from the former, 40-year-old Station 1 to its brand new replacement half a mile east at 950 W. Schaumburg Road in May 2006. After the old station is gone, the village plans to sell the site for commercial use.

Elk Grove man arraigned

A 40-year-old Elk Grove Village man pleaded innocent Tuesday to new counts of obstructing justice related to the March 15 murder of Rebecca Klein in Villa Park. Klein's roommate, Nicole Abusharif, 26, is facing first-degree murder charges. Prosecutors charged Robert L. Edwards, 40, of 949 Wilshire, with obstructing justice shortly after the murder. They allege he lied to police to hinder the investigation. Abusharif and Edwards previously worked together. Last week, a DuPage grand jury indicted him on additional counts of obstructing justice after prosecutors accused him of also lying about his whereabouts the night of the murder.

Women injured in car crash

Four women were taken to Alexian Brothers Medical Center in Elk Grove Village Tuesday after they were involved in a car accident at the corner of Devon Avenue and Arlington Heights Road. Itasca firefighters were called to the scene at 12:02 p.m., where they found a two-car accident with two women in one car and two others in another car. Two of the women had what appeared to be life-threatening injuries, while the other two had less severe injuries, said Itasca Assistant Chief Greg McDonald. The status of their conditions is unknown, he said.

Developer requests time

Wheeling village board members have been asked to extend the deadline for completion of the three remaining outparcels of the Westin Chicago North Shore Hotel development on Milwaukee Avenue. The buildout is supposed to be complete by January. But Michael Firsel, president of Mid-America Development Partners, asked the board Monday for an extension until July 2010. Firsel said the extension would give his firm enough time to evaluate various options for parking alternatives, including the possibility of building a 90-to-100-room addition to the hotel that would include a parking deck. One alternative would be building the addition and parking on land currently used to handle storm water. That would require that the village enter into an agreement with the Cook County Forest Preserve District to handle the storm water on forest preserve property to the south.

Lindbergh's final dismissal

A pile of limestone was all that remained Tuesday after crews finished the demolition of the Lindbergh Schoolhouse in Hoffman Estates. The two-day process to raze the 78-year-old, one-room school drew no protests, though preservationists had long sought to save the structure based on its perceived historical significance. The building was last inhabited in 1995 as a private residence, and the school stopped admitting students in 1948. Over the last 12 years there have been several failed attempts to save the house, with the latest plan to build a children's memorial. Developer Terrestris Homes plans to build 55 single-family homes on the site, which is zoned for residential use.
