Help catch vandals

In light of recent vandalism, the Geneva Park District asks anyone seeing suspicious people or activity in its parks call the district or the police. Parks and properties superintendent Larry Gabriel told the park board Monday someone has been spreading feces in the hoods and tunnels of playground slides and other play equipment. Because of this, district workers have had to start inspecting playground equipment every day. The district's number is (630) 232-4542.

Cigar shop catches fire

A small fire sent a St. Charles cigar shop up in smoke, causing about $40,000 in damage. St. Charles fire officials were called to La Vita Cigar Shop, 2015 Dean St., Unit 4, for the fire alarm. Firefighters found a small fire in the back of the store that was contained by a sprinkler head. Firefighters put the rest of the fire out in about 15 minutes, officials said. No one was injured. Officials do not expect the store to be open today. An employee on the scene told firefighters he didn't know what was burning. The cause of the fire is attributed to discarded smoking materials, officials said.
