Coupe de Cuneo
Eugene Johnson still displays his 1972 Cadillac Coupe deVille, still looking the same way it did off the showroom floor.
For many years, he has brought his car to the Cuneo Museum and Gardens when area car organizations such as the Packard and Porsche clubs, organized the event.
But now Johnson, president of the Cadillac LaSalle Chapter of Antique Automobile Clubs of America, will host the fall tradition Sunday in Vernon Hills.
And Johnson is optimistic that the owners of many cars will show up because thousands of fliers have been passed out across the Northwest suburbs to spread the word.
"It's a big undertaking," said Collins, who lives in Chicago.
Museum spokesman Mary Cook said the car show has become a fall tradition there where the cars complement the museum's grounds.
"The backdrop is suitable for this type of show," she said.
Johnson said the show is open to antique and classic cars built in 1982 or earlier. Cars will be categorized in pre-war and post-war categories. He adds while they are a Cadillac club, the show is not limited to one auto maker.
"We encourage all cars to come," he said.
Among the cars Johnson said friends will bring are a rare 1924 Chrysler and a rare Rolls-Royce.
"There will be some old cars from the 1930s. Those will be featured in the circle drive in front of the mansion," he said.
The cost to participate in the car show is $10 in advance or at the door. To register, call Johnson at (773) 775-4916.
Last year, Cuneo organizers decided to add onto the car show by including a flea market, food and musical entertainment. Cook said the attractions received a positive response and will once again add to the atmosphere.
Guitarist Merv Collins will perform throughout the festival as guests can walk through the flea market to see vendors sell family appropriate items such as crafts, antiques, artwork, jewelry, and books. Food and drinks also will be available to buy on the museum grounds.
Self-guided mansion tours will be offered through the event for an additional admission fee.
