Messy airdrop in Lisle
This wasn't the kind of holiday decorating some Lisle residents envisioned.
Around 4 p.m. Monday, a homeowner told police she found what appeared to be feces and urine in her front and back yards and on her house.
When officers arrived, they also found the waste in the yards of neighboring homes on Arborview Drive and on other nearby streets.
"They were driving down streets and noticed it was on everybody's lawn," Sgt. Ron Wilke said Tuesday. "In some areas, it was more."
The waste may have been released from an airplane lavatory, police said. The Federal Aviation Administration is investigating, officials said.
"We don't have any other idea of where it may have come from," Wilke said.
Police also notified the DuPage County Health Department and Lisle-Woodridge fire officials, who say the waste isn't hazardous.
Officers sent out a notice to neighbors in response to their concern.
On Tuesday afternoon, Chester Grabowski was outside his home on Arborview, peering at some remaining residue.
He said he first noticed about 10 spots of waste in his front yard on Monday.
"It's weird," he said. "At first, it looked like a dog did something. But there were a lot of spots with no footprints."
Still, he wasn't taking it too seriously. With five children and 10 grandchildren, "nothing grosses me out," he said.
"I'm not mad. What's there to be mad about?" he said, before jokingly adding, "although if (airline officials) want to offer me something (for my trouble), I'd take it."
Police say rain run-off and melting snow will naturally remove the waste.
But they advise people to remove any solid waste from around their home by disposing of it in the garbage.
Homeowners can apply a disinfectant of one part household bleach to 10 parts water to affected areas like sidewalks and driveways. Test the solution on a small area prior to using it, officials said.
