Almost all Indian Trails Public Library District programs are free and everyone is welcome; however, most programs require registration in advance.
Smartest Card: The "Smartest Card" Campaign encourages residents ages 5 and older to get a library card. While supplies last, the library will offer free limited edition Indian Trails wallets to the first 900 people who register for new blue library cards.

Lapsit Reading: This 30-minute educational program for infants ages 18 months and younger with caregivers includes rhymes, songs and stories. Encourage babies' early language skills and socialize with others at 10 a.m. Monday.
TGIF @ Indian Trails: Bring friends and join in for an afternoon of Dance Dance Revolution, Guitar Hero, Wii Sports or a game brought from home from 3 to 5 p.m. Friday. Snacks and water will be provided.
Toddler Family Storytime: Encourage children's pre-literacy skills with stories, songs and finger plays at 10 a.m. today and Thursday, Aug. 29 and 30. This 30-minute program is designed for children 18 through 36 months old and their caregivers.
Preschool Crafts: Parents can make a fun and easy craft with their children ages 3 to pre-kindergarten 5 at 10 a.m. today.
Chess for All Ages: Players of all ages can learn how to play chess, share moves and strategies with other players or just sit down for a game at 1:30 p.m. Sunday. No prior knowledge of chess is required.
High School Reading Finale: High school students can celebrate the end of summer with music, poetry, computer and video games, karaoke, pizza and fun, at 5:30 p.m. Sunday. Enjoy free food and meet new friends from other local high schools. All ninth- through 12th-graders are welcome.
Meditation Experience: Joharid's seminar will discuss how to do meditation and its importance, at 7 p.m. Tuesday. Non-denominational meditation techniques will be demonstrated, and participants can join in.
Back to School Barbecue: Enjoy a free family barbecue at the library and taste of typical foods one can grill, as well as garnishes made from vegetables grown in the Children's Garden at 1 p.m. Aug. 25.
eBay Essentials: Marci K. Buerger will discuss the auction process, navigating the eBay site, feedback ratings, what type of things are for sale, selling strategies, bidding, phishing and legal concerns at 7 p.m. Aug. 27.
Children's Advocates: This one-hour meeting at 6 p.m. Aug. 28 will explore fun and creative ways to provide additional library programs, materials and services for young people. For details, call Rose, at (847) 279-2248.
Poetic License: Members share creative ideas, learn about publishing markets, engage in writing exercises, and read their poems aloud with published author and poetry magazine publisher Michelle True at 7 p.m. Aug. 29.
Nat King Cole: Jack Diamond will discuss the career of Nat King Cole, one of the most popular singers in the 20th century, at 7 p.m. Aug. 30.
The Best of Stage, Screen, Radio, and TV: The Buffalo Grove Park District Fine Arts Show Choir will perform award winning jazz, pop and the best of Broadway at 7 p.m. Sept. 4.
Writer's Workshop: Published author Ginny Foley facilitates as participants share and critique their work at 7 p.m. Sept. 4.
Empower Yourself, Empower Your Life: Unhappy with the direction your life is going and feel powerless to make changes Learn how to change self-defeating beliefs and reclaim your personal power at 7 p.m. Sept. 6.
Bi-lingual Storytime: Children 3 to 7 years and their families are invited to listen to stories, rhymes and sing songs in English and Spanish Saturdays, Sept. 8 and 22.
Classical Guitar: Enjoy the beautiful music of Michael Sytchev, solo guitarist and composer, while he plays "Suite for Solo Guitar," "Metamorphoses," "Barcelona," "Serenade," "Retro Suite," "Promenade" and more at 2 p.m. Sept. 9.
Preschool Drop-in Storytime: Preschool storytimes are at 11 a.m. Mondays, Sept. 10, 17, 24 or Tuesdays, Sept. 11, 18, 25. Children ages 3 to prekindergarten 5 will enjoy a half-hour of stories, finger plays and a short movie. No need to register.

War records database: The Indian Trails Public Library District now offers a database that makes 90 million war records, from Jamestown in 1607 through the end of the Vietnam war in 1975, available to everyone seven days a week.
With wars come millions of records that can shed light on family history, detailing everything from soldiers' height to their stats in military baseball leagues.
Beyond the military records, Ancestry Library Edition makes it possible to search census, Social Security, immigration and birth and marriage records.
Computer Software: Home use computer software is available at the library. The library has programs like the "Complete Career IQ Test" and "Resumes that Work," that can help users work through their interests and narrow down career choices or create a resume that reflects the real you. The library also has dream interpretation software called "Secret Paths to Your Dreams" and a variety of other software for both PC and Macintosh.
The library also has the "Baby Einstein" line of products to help children grasp fundamental concepts while having fun on the computer and "Dr. Seuss Kindergarten: When Kids Laugh More, They Learn More," with 250 different lessons that kids and parents can share.
Other topics available include phonics, math, science, selling a house or preparing the whole family for a disaster. Check the library's catalog or ask a librarian for help.
Library catalog in Spanish: Patrons can now search for items at the library in Spanish, in-person or online. When using the catalog online, go to the library Web site, click on the library catalog, then click on the "Kids and EspaƱol" tab, then click on "Biblioteca in Spanish."
Playaway Digital Audiobooks: The library now offers entire unabridged audiobooks small enough to fin in the palm of a patron's hand. Patrons can supply their own headphones, or buy a set for a dollar. The books are available in the front room for Indian Trails cardholders.
