Briefs: Seven apply for board seat
Seven candidates have applied to fill a vacancy on the St. Charles school board. The board has 30 days from Chris Hansen's July 25 resignation to fill the seat on the seven-member board. The appointment would last until spring 2009. The board plans to meet in open session Monday to review applications, develop interview questions and decide how many applicants to screen. Interviews will take place in open session later next week, with the appointment of a new member shortly thereafter, officials said. Applicants must be registered to vote and have lived in District 303 for at least one year. The district includes St. Charles and parts of South Elgin, West Chicago, Wayne and Campton Hills.
Septic, well alert in Kane
Because of flooding, water supplies could become contaminated. The county health department warns that if the safety of your water supply is in doubt, use bottled water for drinking, preparing food, making ice, washing hands and dishes, brushing teeth and preparing baby formula. Do not eat any food that has come in contact with the potentially contaminated water.
If there is standing sewage in your yard, rope off the area for a least a week after the water has receded and keep children and pets away from that area. Household water use should be minimized if your septic system is flooded. All non-biodegradable items should be collected with rubber gloves and disposed of.
The department will test wells suspected of being contaminated for free. For instructions and sample collection bottles, visit the health department offices at 1240 N. Highland Ave., Aurora, or 115 S. Grove Ave., Elgin. Call (847) 608-2850.
