22-year-old dead in morning crash
A 22-year-old Mount Prospect man died and another man is hospitalized after an early morning crash Sunday in Bensenville, police said.
At 5:08 a.m., officers responded to the area near Irving Park Road and Walnut Street, where they found two seriously injured occupants inside a green 1998 Honda coupe, police said. Both had to be extricated from the vehicle, officials said.
The Honda had collided with a white 2007 International semi-truck. The driver of the truck was uninjured, police said.
The driver of the Honda, Victorino Lopez-Mendoza, 22, of Mount Prospect was pronounced dead at the scene.
The passenger in his vehicle was transported to Elmhurst Memorial Hospital. The passenger's name and condition was not available Sunday.
As of Sunday night, no charges had been filed or tickets issued, police said.
A preliminary investigation indicates the truck was traveling east on Irving Park Road. Meanwhile, the Honda drove north through the parking lot of 460 W. Irving Park Road, located on the south side of Irving Park Road. The Honda exited the parking lot driveway onto Irving Park Road in front of the truck, but the truck was unable to stop in time to avoid striking the driver's side of the Honda, police said.
The Bensenville Police Department, DuPage County sheriff's office, DuPage coroner's office and the Illinois State Police are continuing to investigate the crash.
The DuPage County coroner's office will perform an autopsy today.
