Theater auditions: Actors from the community are invited to audition for two productions being mounted by the College of Lake County Theatre Department this fall. Auditions for "The Little Prince" and "The Crucible" will be held at 6:30 p.m. today in the James Lumber Center for the Performing Arts.

"The Little Prince" is the college's annual children's theater production. Performances will be Oct. 3 through 7, including some school day performances. Auditions will be held in the Mainstage Theatre.

Director Scott Mullins is looking for a boy or girl age 10 to 14 for the main role, a man in his mid-20s to mid-40s and five to 10 ensemble members (men or women, any age, all types) for speaking and non-speaking roles. Auditions will begin at 6:30 p.m. with group improvisation exercises. Actors should wear comfortable clothing and bring a 90-second memorized monologue (or be prepared to read a selection from the play) and an acting resume if they have one. Callbacks will be held at 6:30 p.m. on Aug. 30. Copies of the play are available for review at the Grayslake Campus LRC/Library circulation desk. Rehearsals begin Sept. 4.

Auditions for Arthur Miller's "The Crucible" will take place in the Studio Theatre. Performances will be given Nov. 9 to 11 and 15 to 17. Director Thomas B. Mitchell is looking to cast girls from age 14 to women 60-plus and men from age 17 to 60-plus. Actors should bring a one- to two-minute dramatic monologue and be prepared to stay the whole evening. Callbacks for major roles are scheduled for Aug. 29. Rehearsals begin Oct. 1 and will be held Monday through Thursdays from 6:30 to 10 p.m.

Building dedication: The College of Lake County will hold a dedication ceremony for its new Southlake Educational Center classroom building at 5:30 p.m. today at 1120 S. Milwaukee Ave. in Vernon Hills. The public is invited to attend.

The dedication program will include remarks by dignitaries and the unveiling of a plaque, followed by refreshments and tours of significant features of the new building. Tour highlights will include two 10-minute science lab demonstrations, the two green roofs and artwork chosen especially for Southlake from the CLC art collection.

Officials scheduled to speak at the ceremony include William M. Griffin, chairman of the CLC board of trustees; Roger L. Byrne, Vernon Hills village president; Joseph Gust, chairman of the Southlake Educational Center advisory committee and dean of students at Stevenson High School; Harrison Ray, vice president of the CLC Student Government Association; and a full-time CLC faculty member who teaches at Southlake.

The new classroom facility is a 47,000-square-foot, $13.89 million three-story building with six computer labs, a science lab, a library, a learning assistance center, a bookstore, full-time faculty offices and a three-story glass enclosed student lounge on the building's southwest corner.

Among the features of the new building are "green" roof areas -- two 1,000 square-foot, roof areas consisting of plantings that absorb rainwater, reducing the amount of storm water runoff flowing into the nearby Des Plaines River and providing an ever-changing colorful landscape for students and staff to enjoy. Another green technology innovation, an energy-saving white roof, covers the rest of the building

Dance troupe auditions: Dancers from the Lake County community are invited to audition for the College of Lake County Prairie Spirits Holiday Dance Concert, which will be performed Nov. 30 and Dec. 1 and 2 in the James Lumber Center for the Performing Arts.

Auditions will be held from 7 to 9:30 p.m. on Thursday, in the Experimental Theatre (P103) of the James Lumber Center for the Performing Arts on the CLC Grayslake Campus. Two film series: The College of Lake County will present a series of recent international films and a series of independent films beginning Thursday. There is no charge for the films, which will be screened at 7 p.m. on Fridays in Room A162 (unless noted otherwise) on the CLC Grayslake Campus.

• "The Memory of a Killer" (2003) will be shown on Thursday. In this intense Belgian police drama, an aging hit man (played by Jan Decleir) struggles to finish his most recent assignment while hiding the fact that he has Alzheimer's disease and is losing his memory.

• "Moolaadé" (2004) will be screened on Sept. 28. Directed by African filmmaker and novelist Ousmane Sembene, "Moolaadé" deals with one woman's revolt against her village's cruel traditions in a manner that surprises, delights and inspires. This film is being co-sponsored by the CLC Women's Center.

• "Shutter" (2004) will be shown on Oct. 19 in the C Wing Auditorium (C005). "Shutter" falls within the tradition of recent Asian horror films while presenting an original spin on the imagery and themes of movies such as "Ringu" and "A Tale of Two Sisters."

• "Après Vous" (2003), screened on Nov. 2, is a comedy about death, love and French food. A Parisian waiter stops a man from committing suicide and then takes him under his wing, but matters become complicated when he attempts to repair his new friend's broken romance. This film is co-sponsored by the Communication Arts, Humanities and Fine Arts Division as part of French Week at CLC. The films in the CLC Independent Film Series include:

•Early Shorts will be shown on Sept. 14 and represent the 400-500 independent films submitted to the Lake County Film Festival. The complete lineup will be announced two weeks before the screening.

• "Cake: A Wedding Story" will be shown on Oct. 5. When two star-crossed lovers set on eloping are forced into having a big wedding, the bride develops a plan of her own. But the groom is not privy to the plan, and family and friends start to take sides at a reception for a wedding that never took place.

• "Riding Solo on Top of the World" will be presented on Nov. 16. Director Gaurav Jani covers thousands of miles on his motorcycle, from his home in Mumbai through the Changthang Plateau, one of the most remote places in the world. Along the way, he films his journey through the beautiful landscapes and the people he meets along the way, including the Buddhist Chang pas.

• "King Corn" will be shown on Dec. 7. The film concerns two recent college graduates who travel to their ancestral home in rural Iowa, plant a single acre of America's most powerful crop, corn, and attempt to follow its fate as food. In their year-long adventure they see the realities of modern farming firsthand, explore a fast-food nation built on corn syrup sodas and corn-fed meat and come to question government subsidies, intensive agriculture and cheap food.

Business skills workshops: The College of Lake County's Illinois Small Business Development Center is offering fall workshops designed to quickly improve the business knowledge and skills of small business owners and entrepreneurs:

•QuickBooks Module 1 -- A Practical Introduction (TBSM 20) 6:30 to 10 p.m. Sept. 20 and 27. Course fee: $149.

•Franchising Facts and Fiction (TBSM 11) from 7 to 9 p.m. Sept. 10. Course fee: $35.

•Marketing on a Shoe String (TBSM 59) from 7 to 9 p.m. Sept. 13. Course fee: $35.

•Sales and Selling -- Close Those Deals! (TBSM 113) from 7 to 9 p.m. Sept. 25 Course fee: $35.

•Child Care -- Starting and Growing a Successful Business (TBSM 16) from 6:30 to 9:30 p.m. on Wednesdays, Sept. 19 to Oct. 24. This six-week course explains how to start and operate a child care business and stay within all legal requirements. Offered in partnership with YWCA Lake County, it is also taught in Spanish and meets at the same time as the English section. Course fee: $100.

•NxLeveL Business Start-up (TBSM 8) from 6:30 to 9:30 p.m. on Thursdays, Sept. 20 to Dec. 13. This 12-week course teaches the fundamentals of starting a business, including market research, financial modeling and operations. The registration deadline is Sept. 5. Course fee: $350 (books included) or $430 (books and Business Plan Pro software).

•Starting a Business in Illinois (TBSM 10) from 6:30 to 9:30 p.m. Sept. 26 Course fee: $40.
