Parade deadline is today:
The Puerto Rican Heritage Organization needs participants for its annual Puerto Rican Day parade at noon Aug. 11. To join, call Ruperto Acevedo at (847) 791-6950 or William Aponte at (847) 531-8349 today. The parade starts at 11 a.m. at Elgin Area School District U-46's offices, 355 E. Chicago St., and precedes BoriquaFest 2007 at Elgin's Festival Park. Participation in the parade is free.
Marine picnic on Sunday:
The Marine Corps League Detachment 077 in Elgin will hold a picnic for Marines, their families and friends at noon Sunday at VFW Post 1307's outdoor pavilion, 1601 Weld Road, Elgin. Refreshments will be provided. For details, call Jerry Chartrand at (847) 710-1404.
Help Shelter Inc. set up:
Shelter Inc., a nonprofit child welfare agency, is opening a thrift store in Elgin, and at least 40 volunteers from 11 local Home Depot stores are stepping up to help convert an empty storefront into a fully functioning business. The conversion begins at 7 p.m. Tuesday at 300K S. McLean Blvd. -- a storefront within the Town and Country Shopping Center that Shelter Inc. will use for the store. The project lasts all day and includes painting and installing shelves, hooks and bathroom accessories. Proceeds from the thrift shop will support abused children and first time parents.
Children's center honored:
Joy Community Christian Children's Center was selected as the next Gordon Larsen Business Achievement Award winner by the Lake in the Hills Business Relations Committee. The award program was established by the committee to recognize village businesses for their contributions to the community. The nomination recognized Joy Community Christian Children's Center for its regular donations to the Lake in the Hills Food Pantry, as well as its recent participation at the Lake in the Hills Air Expo. In addition to community support, it also was recognized for its quality services. Joy Community Christian Children's Center will be presented with the award at the Aug. 23, village board meeting.
