Suit filed against Schaumburg restaurant charged with serving bleach-tainted water

A Schaumburg restaurant accidentally served a pregnant woman bleach in her drinking water, a lawsuit filed Monday contends.

Meena Goel, a dentist, was dining at Moretti's restaurant Feb. 11, 2006, and had ordered water because she was three months pregnant, said attorney Mary Jo Kelly. Within a few seconds she vomited.

A manager, identified in the suit as Tony Stauton, came over to sample the tainted glass and also became ill, Kelley said.

According to the suit, one of the staff had been preparing to clean and fixed a bleach solution in a drinking water pitcher, which one of the wait staff then mistook for drinking water.

Besides becoming ill at the restaurant, Goel later suffered after-effects related to the incident, Kelly said.

"There was an episode besides the horribleness of vomiting all over the place," said Kelly, whose offices are in Wheaton.

Two days later, Meena Goel awoke with profuse bleeding and rushed to the hospital for an ultrasound to ensure the baby was okay. It was, said Kelly, and she later delivered a healthy child.

A manager at Moretti's Monday referred questions to Ala Carte Entertainment corporate headquarters where there was no answer Monday evening.
