Naperville's new city manager sworn in
A graduate of the U.S. Naval Academy, Doug Krieger is no stranger to oaths of office.
Naperville's finance director took another oath Tuesday as the city council officially named him the new city manager.
"Today, by many well wishers, I've been told this is my day," Krieger said. "That is absolutely not the case. This is our day, this is the city's day. Only with all of your support will we be able to succeed and I'm encouraged and confident the support will be there and we will go on to do great things, at a reasonable cost of course."
Naperville has been without a permanent city manager for a year, since Peter Burchard abruptly resigned to take a job in the private sector.
Robert Marshall, the assistant city manager, has been serving as city manager pro tem.
Nearly 30 people applied for the city manager position and the council announced its choice of Krieger on Nov. 21.
Krieger, 44, was sworn into office Tuesday with his wife, Elaine, his children and parents by his side. Elaine then placed his new nameplate in front of his seat among the council.
His contract is a renewable one-year deal with a starting salary of $163,000 and annual performance reviews.
Krieger has been serving as finance director since 2003. He previously spent nine years with PricewaterhouseCoopers and Coopers & Lybrand in the audit and business assurance services group.
He is a former naval officer in the submarine service and has a bachelor's degree in political science from the U.S. Naval Academy and an MBA with a concentration in finance and accounting from the University of Chicago.
The city also issued a proclamation Tuesday recognizing Marshall for his 30 years of service with the city as city manager pro tem, assistant city manager and police captain.
He will return to his role as assistant city manager.
"I don't know where the time's gone Bob, but it's been a great run," Mayor George Pradel said. "We've enjoyed all the time you've put into it and really given us 110 percent all the way through."
