Briefs: U-46 state scholars named
Two hundred and thirty Elgin Area School District U-46 high school students were named Illinois State Scholars last week. The State Scholar program is an honorary recognition that is received by approximately 10 percent of Illinois high school graduates each year. In order to qualify, high school students must take the ACT or SAT, perform in the top one-half of their high school class or score in the 95th percentile on a college-entrance exam, and graduate from high school during the academic year in which they are selected. Buckle up in West Chicago
West Chicago police issued 130 citations for seat belt and child-restraint violations during their first Seat Belt Safety Awareness campaign that ran Nov. 14 to 30. The program was funded by a grant from the Illinois Department of Transportation and allowed the department to hire back officers to provide traffic enforcement for child-restraint, seat belt, speeding and alcohol-related violations. The next campaign runs Friday to Jan. 4, and the full grant ends Sept. 30, 2009.

Judson student a winner
Judson University's Jason Roberts last month won second place in the Metal Construction Association Student Design Competition for his design of a maritime museum. Roberts' entry was one of 142 other designs supplied by architecture students from around the country and the world. David Ogoli, associate professor of architecture for Judson's School of Art, Design and Architecture, served as Roberts' sponsor. Judges believed Roberts' design would be the most buildable while maintaining a high aesthetic appeal. Roberts will receive $1,500 for second place and earned another $1,000 for the school.
