One injured in Wheaton apartment fire

One person was left homeless after fire destroyed his Wheaton apartment at 1115 College Ave., authorities said Thursday.

Wheaton Deputy Chief Bill Schultz said firefighters were called to the apartment complex about 6 p.m. Wednesday and arrived to find fire coming out the front window of a unit on the first floor of the building.

One resident was treated for a minor injury at the scene and released.

The cause of the fire remained under investigation late Thursday, but authorities said its origin is not suspicious. No damage estimates were available.

Schultz said firefighters were able to bring the blaze under control in about 15 minutes and prevented it from spreading to adjoining structures.

The city's building department declared the damaged unit uninhabitable. Some smoke damage was reported on the second floor, but those residents were able to return.
