Mt. Prospect will be merry and bright all month
Mount Prospect's big Winter Festival weekend is upon us with the Mount Prospect Historical Society Holiday Housewalk tonight; the library's Teddy Bear Walk, Mount Prospect Park District's holiday open house at the conservatory and the village winter parade Saturday; and the Mount Prospect Community Band concert Sunday.
Be a part of it by getting the particulars on each event at www.mountprospect.org or (847) 392-6000.
Still, this big weekend is not the end of the many holiday events and fundraisers planned this year. Some of the lesser-known events are just as exciting!
Polar Express: Join the River Trails Park District for a ride on the Polar Express. Three trips are planned, at 1:20 p.m. train Dec. 15, 17 and 22. Meet at the Prospect Heights train station on Wolf Road, just north of Euclid Avenue. Cost is $10 for park district residents and $12 for nonresidents, plus a small parking fee. You'll ride the train to Lake Villa for some winter fun, then return by train to Prospect Heights at 4:15 p.m. Each child will get a little gift to remind them of this magical day. An adult must accompany all children; registration is required. (847) 255-1200.
Midwinter's Tales: Members of the ShawChicago Theatre Company will present a holiday concert reading, involving tales and traditions from many cultures, at 7:30 p.m., Dec. 9 at the Mount Prospect Public Library, 10 S. Emerson St. "Midwinter's Tales" will explore how people around the world use mirth and memories to cheer the dark days and keep warm during the long, cold nights. Register at www.mppl.org/events or (847) 253-5675.
Light Up the Town: The Mount Prospect Junior Women's Club will again sell decorative luminaria kits. The sale is 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Dec. 13 at the River Trails Park District's miniature golf building, 1500 E. Euclid Ave. Each kit is $4 and includes five candles, five bags and sand. Stop by and purchase kits that day or pre-order at jrsluminaria@comcast.net or (224) 735-3372.
Holiday photos: Stop by the Friendship Park Conservatory, 395 Algonquin Road, Des Plaines, for holiday photos of your family, cats and dogs. You supply the photographer, but the Mount Prospect Park District will supply a gorgeous backdrop in their lovely atrium. Schedule an appointment with Pat at (847) 298-2500. The slots fill quickly!
Breakfast with Santa: Kids, parents and grandparents can all enjoy Breakfast with Santa on Dec. 13 at the Rob Roy clubhouse, 505 E. Camp McDonald Road. Both 9 a.m. and 11 a.m. seatings are available but today, Dec. 5, is the registration deadline, at (847) 255-1200. The cost is $7 per person for park district residents and $8.40 per person for nonresidents. If you want your child to receive a gift from Santa, you must drop it off at the Weiss Center, 1500 E. Euclid Ave., by Dec. 10. It must be small, under $10 in value, wrapped and clearly marked with your child's first and last names.
