Czech endorsement of Roskam unethical
I received a letter from Rudy Czech endorsing Peter Roskam for Congress. I have absolutely no objection to campaign literature from one citizen to another. However, I thought it was a letter from the village of Winfield because the envelope was marked, "Village President Rudy Czech, Village of Winfield" - all in the same sized type.
I immediately opened this letter because I thought it was an official letter from the village. However, I was surprised to learn, at the bottom of the letter, in small type, a disclaimer that read, "Paid for by Roskam for Congress - not printed or mailed at taxpayer expense."
While I have since found out, to my dismay, that this is legal, I believe this is highly unethical. It is unethical because I live in the village and I do not want my elected officials endorsing any candidate in my name - which is what Czech did when he used the words, "Village of Winfield" on his letters. It was unethical because it used deceit in the form of an official-looking letter from a sitting representative of my village to lure me into reading the letter. Only after reading through the entire letter and absorbing the letter's content and reading this disclaimer was I able to discern that this was instead a political campaign endorsement. The Daily Herald reported that Czech is running for re-election. I believe that this action makes me question whether Czech has the character and judgment to be village president of Winfield. I am sure that I am not the only person in Winfield to open this letter because they thought it was an official letter from the village. I hope others who received this letter will call or write President Czech to let him know that his actions were unacceptable.
