• An older teenage boy, possibly 17, took $40 from an elderly couple on the 700 block of North Russell Street around 3:15 p.m. Oct. 3. He pretended to be a student at Prospect High School, soliciting funds for a band trip to Europe. He told the couple he would give them a magazine subscription for the donation, but they refused the subscription and gave him the $40 donation anyway. He gave them a receipt, asked for water and used their bathroom before leaving. He tried the same ploy at the next door neighbor's home, but the man there refused to let him in and would not give him water. There was no indication anything was missing from the first home. The high school band was not soliciting funds and members do not go door-to-door.
