Naperville marks Veterans Day
Whether they served during World War II or the war in Iraq, whether they gave their lives or never saw a battlefield, veterans will be honored around the country Tuesday.
Naperville will observe Veterans Day with a ceremony at 11 a.m. at Veteran's Park, 303 E. Gartner Road.
The event will include a rifle salute, taps and music from the Naperville Municipal Band. Commanders from both the VFW and American Legion are scheduled to speak.
"It's so important, especially at this time, to renew our resolve and our support of the military," said Jan Barbour, of the Judd Kendall VFW Ladies Auxiliary. "Some people say 'I don't agree with the war but I support the soldiers.' I'm not sure you can split hairs that way."
Tuesday's ceremony will go on rain or shine but may be shortened if there is inclement weather.
Area veterans also will visit Naperville Unit District 203 schools throughout the morning to share their stories and stress the importance of the holiday.
Barbour has been reading students' submissions to the Patriot's Pen essay contest and said one that stood out talked about how the strength of the country's military will depend on how it treats its veterans.
"If we do not respect what veterans have done in the past we can't expect future generations to defend us with great willingness," Barbour said. "We have to continue to show respect for our military in order for the youth to understand it is something to be respected."
