Winfield Township rejects tax hike for road repairs

Winfield Township officials failed yet again in their attempt to raise money for road maintenance.

Voters consistently have rejected tax increases since the 1990s to repair roads in unincorporated areas. They appeared to do it again on Tuesday.

With all precincts reporting, unofficial tallies showed 72 percent against the measure and 28 percent supporting it.

Officials asked for a 2-cent tax-rate increase to generate an additional $200,000 a year to pay for paving and maintenance projects for 48 miles of roads in the township.

If approved, the owner of a $300,000 house would have paid about $20 more next year to the township.
