Volunteers sought to teach reading, ESL

McHenry County College's Office of Adult Education is looking for volunteers to teach reading or English as a Second Language. A literacy tutor does not have to speak a second language to teach in the adult education literacy program.

Prospective volunteers are asked to observe a literacy class first, and then to attend one of the orientation sessions that are held throughout the year. The next volunteer orientation is scheduled for 7 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 12 in Building A, Room A352.

Attending five basic training workshops is also required. The free basic training provides the information and skills needed to work with literacy students. Flexible work schedules are provided to meet people's busy schedules, including those who are retired or working full time.

Call Jane Brehm at (815) 455-8542 to schedule a class observation and to reserve a seat at the orientation on Nov. 12.

This project was made possible in part by a grant awarded by the Illinois State Library, a Division of the Office of Secretary of State, using state funds designated for literacy.
