Canadiens get past Blues
ST. LOUIS -- Alexei Kovalev scored the lone shootout goal to give the Montreal Canadiens a 3-2 victory over the St. Louis Blues on Sunday night.
After the Blues missed on all three of their shots in the tiebreaker, Kovalev beat Manny Legace with a high backhander for the win.
Andrei Kostitsyn and Robert Lang scored in regulation for the Canadiens, who won for only the second time in six games after starting the season 8-1-1.
Carey Price stopped 24 shots.
The Canadiens were 0-for-10 on the power play and have scored twice in their last 36 chances. St. Louis was 1-for-9 with the man advantage.
Steve Regier scored twice for the Blues, and Legace also stopped 24 shots.
Hurricanes 3, Lightning 2, SO
RALEIGH, N.C. -- Rick Tocchet lost in his first game as as Tampa Bay's coach when Tuomo Ruutu and Rod Brind'Amour scored in the shootout and Cam Ward stopped two shots in the tiebreaker for Carolina.
Tocchet became a head coach for the first time when Barry Melrose was fired Friday. A veteran of 18 NHL seasons, Tocchet perhaps is best known for his role in a sports betting ring that led to a league suspension.
Vincent Lecavalier and Jussi Jokinen both failed to score in the shootout, giving the Hurricanes only their second victory in six games. Brind'Amour also scored in regulation to move out of a tie for 50th on the career NHL scoring list.
Wade Brookbank also scored for Carolina. Lecavalier and Martin St. Louis scored in regulation for Tampa Bay.
