Recycling cart too big? Trade it in

Those large, blue 65-gallon recycling bins distributed in Wheaton this summer are just a little too big for some residents to manage.

Next week, the city is giving anyone 60 years and older an opportunity to apply for an exchange with a much smaller container.

They're also extending the option to townhouse owners whose associations prohibit outside storage. Mike Dzugan, Wheaton's assistant city manager, cautioned residents at Monday night's meeting that the difference between the two containers is substantial. They're about half the size.

And residents should be certain they want the free exchange: Opting a second time for the 65-gallon containers will cost $55.

Anyone who meets the criteria can register for the one-time exchange Nov. 10-14 at city hall, 303 W. Wesley St. Proof of age and address is required.
