Claims outrageous about Obama's faith

I feel compelled to respond to the outrageous claims made by reader Robert Graham regarding Barack Obama's Christian faith. Clearly Mr. Graham is uninformed.

First, it is important to note that the church to which President-Elect Obama belonged (and at which the Rev. Jeremiah Wright was pastor) is Trinity United Church of Christ.

It is not a black liberation theology cult, but rather a mainline protestant church, part of the United Church of Christ, or UCC, as it is commonly called. The UCC was formed with the merger of the Evangelical and Reformed Church and the Congregational Church.

These denominations have a long history in this country, going back to the 1600s in New England. Just about every town in New England has at least one and often several Congregational UCC churches.

In reading Barack Obama's books, one learns that he was not raised in any faith. He was led to the Christian faith as a result of working with people from churches in Chicago when he was a community organizer.

These people of faith helped President-Elect Obama learn the Gospel of Jesus Christ, and he eventually accepted Jesus as his savior. If that is not the definition of a Christian, then I don't know what is.
