Tour the world in four days at Harper
Harper College is going around the world in just four days - offering the public an international bazaar of Mexican mariachi bands, German and Turkish food, Middle Eastern dancing and a slew of discussions on everything from the ways Arabs are portrayed in popular films to Khmer culture and the Inca Empire.
The college's annual International Education celebration runs from Monday, Nov. 17 to Thursday, Nov. 20, across the campus at 1200 Algonquin Road, Palatine. Free and open to all. Visit harpercollege.edu or call (847) 925-6750.
New Beginnings puts on the ritz
New Beginnings, a Catholic oriented nondenominational social support organization for separated, divorced, widowed and single persons, will host a dance called Putting on the Ritz, at 8 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 15, in the Hughes Center at St. Mathews Church, 1001 E. Schaumburg Road, in Schaumburg.
Come dance the night away to the music of Paul Adams. Coffee, tea, soft drinks and snacks will be provided. Bring a snack to share. Tickets are $8 in advance; $10 at the door. For information, call Joan at (847) 397-9643.
Want to serve the Palatine Library?
Two six-year seats will come open on the Palatine Public Library District board this spring, and forms are available at the library for people who want to run for trustee.
The consolidated election for library trustees (and other local governing boards) will be held April 7, 2009.
As of Oct. 28, candidates for local offices can pass petition forms to get signatures. The filing period is Jan. 19-26, at which time candidates for the library board must present their statement of candidacy and nominating petitions signed by at least 50 registered voters, who are also library district residents.
A statement of economic interest for the calendar year in which the nominating petitions are filed must also be filed with the Cook County Clerk.
Petitions must be notarized and delivered to the business office of the Palatine Library, 700 N. North Court during regular business hours.
